Hadith 321

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw phlegm on the wall of the mosque, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pebble and cleaned it. Then he said: When any person spits, he should not spit in front of him or to his right side, but rather to his left side or under his foot.

Brief Explanation
There is no restriction of prayer mentioned in this hadith. However, in the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu (number 323), the restriction of prayer is mentioned. Imam Nawawi rahimahullah states that this prohibition is absolute. That is, whether one is in prayer or outside of prayer, whether in the mosque or outside the mosque, spitting in the direction of the qiblah is prohibited.
