Hadith 278

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out (from Madinah) on the day of Eid, he would order that a small spear (lance) be fixed in the ground. When it was placed in front of him, he would face towards it and perform the prayer, and the people would stand behind him. He used to do the same while traveling. (Because of this) the caliphs of the Muslims made it a habit to keep a spear with them.
