Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the people of Kufa complained about Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) to Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him). Therefore, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) removed him and appointed Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) as the governor of Kufa. The people of Kufa even said about Sa’d that he could not even lead the prayer properly. Consequently, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned him and asked, “O Abu Ishaq, the people of Kufa think that you cannot lead the prayer properly.” He replied, “By Allah, I used to lead them in prayer just as the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and I did not fall short in any way. When I led the ‘Isha prayer, I would lengthen the recitation in its first two rak’ahs and lighten the last two.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Abu Ishaq, this is what I expected of you.” Then he sent one or more men with Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) to Kufa. The envoy went to every mosque and inquired about him; everyone praised him. But when they reached the mosque of Banu Abs, a man named Usamah bin Qatadah, whose kunyah was Abu Sa’d, stood up and said, “Since you have asked by Allah, (listen that) Sa’d neither himself participated in jihad with the army, nor did he distribute the spoils of war properly, nor did he judge with justice.” Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), upon hearing this, said, “By Allah, I make three supplications regarding you: O Allah, if this servant of Yours is lying and has stood up only for show and ostentation, then prolong his life, increase his poverty, and subject him to trials.” After that, (the man became so miserable that) when he was asked, he would say, “I am an old and troubled man; I have been afflicted by Sa’d’s curse.” Abdul Malik (one of the narrators of the hadith) said, “I saw him; his eyebrows had drooped over his eyes due to old age, but even then he would tease girls in the streets.”
