Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once prayed in my house while he was ill. He was praying sitting down, and the people were standing behind him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gestured to them to sit down, and after finishing the prayer, he said: “The Imam is appointed so that he may be followed. Therefore, when he goes into ruku‘, you should also go into ruku‘; and when he raises his head, you should also raise your heads; and when he says ‘Sami‘ Allahu liman hamidah’, you should say ‘Rabbana wa lakal hamd’; and when he prays sitting down, you should also pray sitting down.”

Brief Explanation
When the imam leads the prayer sitting due to an excuse, what should the followers do? According to the majority of the early scholars (salaf), as well as Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Shafi’i, and others, when the imam is leading the prayer sitting, the followers who are able to stand should perform the prayer standing behind him. As the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), during his final illness in which he passed away, led the prayer sitting, and behind him, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and other noble companions (radi Allahu anhum) performed the prayer standing. This is also what Imam Bukhari’s (rahimahullah) teacher, Humaydi (rahimahullah), has stated, which is transmitted in Sahih Bukhari, and he considers the hadith in which it is stated that “when the imam prays sitting, you should also pray sitting” to be abrogated.
