Hadith 231

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the Imam says "ghayril-maghdoobi 'alayhim wa la-d-dallin," then you should also say Ameen, because whoever says Ameen along with the angels, all his previous sins are forgiven.

Brief Explanation
The meaning of the word "Ameen" is: "O Allah! Accept the supplications I have made to You." This word was also used among the Jews and Christians, and it has been used in Islam as well. Saying it aloud in the audible prayers was not something objectionable; however, it is unfortunate that some misguided scholars made a mountain out of a molehill. As a result, discord arose among Muslims and for a long time, agitation was created in their hearts. (Raaz)
