Hadith 207

Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I was present in the company of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Musa said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "If a person is in need of ghusl and does not find water for a whole month, should he not perform tayammum and pray?" Shaqiq says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud replied: "He should not perform tayammum, even if he does not find water for a month (and should suspend the prayer)." Upon this, Abu Musa said: "Then what is the meaning of this verse in Surah Al-Ma'idah: 'If you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth'?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If people are given this permission, then soon it will happen that whenever they find the water cold, they will perform tayammum with earth." The narrator states: "I said, so you dislike tayammum for a person in the state of janabah?" He said: "Yes." Then Sayyiduna Abu Musa said: "Do you not know the statement of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) before Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me for a task, and during the journey I needed to perform ghusl but did not find water, so I rolled in the earth like an animal. Then I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this,' and he struck his hands on the earth once, then shook them off, then wiped the back of his right hand with his left or wiped his left hand with his right, then wiped his face with both hands.'" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Do you not see that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not satisfied with Ammar's statement?"

Brief Explanation
There is consensus among the later scholars (muta’akhkhirin) and the successors (khalaf) regarding the permissibility of performing tayammum (dry ablution) due to janabah (major ritual impurity), menstruation (hayd), and postnatal bleeding (nifas) in place of the obligatory ritual bath (ghusl). There was also consensus among the early generations (salaf), except for Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhuma), and Hazrat Ibrahim al-Nakha’i (rahimahullah), from whom the opinion of impermissibility has been transmitted. However, it is also reported that Hazrat Umar and Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhuma) later retracted their earlier view on this issue. As for the permissibility of this matter, authentic ahadith have been transmitted, in comparison to which no one’s statement is worthy of consideration.

Narrator of the hadith: Hazrat Ammar ibn Yasir (radi Allahu anhu) accepted Islam in the very early days. His noble mother’s name was Hazrat Sumayyah (radi Allahu anha). Both his father and mother endured great hardships in the path of Allah. When the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would pass by, he would say, “O family of Yasir, be patient, for indeed your abode is Paradise.” He participated in the Battle of Badr and other expeditions. When he was present at the Battle of Yamamah, his ears were cut off. Later, during the era of Hazrat Umar, he served as the governor of Kufa.
