Hadith 1901

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said regarding the verse, "And do not say to the one who greets you with peace, 'You are not a believer,'" that a man (named Mirdas) was grazing his goats. While on an expedition, some Muslims met him, and he said, "Assalamu Alaikum," but the Muslims, thinking he was making an excuse, killed him and took possession of his goats. Upon this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse. The phrase at the end of the verse, "the goods of worldly life," refers to those very goats.
