Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Urwah: My nephew! In the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it was such that we would see one moon, then another, then a third, and thus two months would pass, and no fire would be lit in the houses of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for cooking food. (Urwah says) I asked: Aunt! Then how did you all survive? She replied: Only on two black things—dates and water. However, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had some Ansari neighbors who had milch goats, and they would send the milk as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) would also give it to us to drink.
