Hadith 182

Lady Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that I placed water for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to perform ghusl (ritual bath). First, he poured water from his right hand onto his left hand and washed both his hands in this manner. Then he washed his private parts. Then he rubbed his hand on the ground and cleaned it with soil and washed it. Then he rinsed his mouth and put water into his nose. Then he washed his face and poured water over his head. Then he moved aside and washed both his feet. Then a towel was given to him, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not dry himself with it.

Brief Explanation
Imam Ibn Qayyim rahimahullah stated that there is no authentic hadith regarding wiping the limbs after ablution (wudu). Rather, what is established from authentic ahadith is that after ritual bath (ghusl), the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned the towel and did not wipe his blessed body with it. Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said that there is much disagreement on this matter. Some people consider it disliked (makruh). Some say it is recommended (mustahabb). Some say that wiping and not wiping are equal. According to us, this last view is the preferred one. (Raaz)
