Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): When such things were said about me of which I had no suspicion, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon to the people regarding my matter. After bearing witness, he praised and glorified Allah as is His due, then said, "To proceed! Advise me about those people who have slandered my wife, for by Allah, I have seen nothing but good in my wife, and the accusation has been made concerning a man (Safwan bin Mu'attal) about whom, by Allah, I have seen nothing but good. Whenever he entered my house, he did so only in my presence, and if I was ever absent from Madinah due to travel, he too was not present, and he would stay with me." Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to my chamber and asked my maid (Barirah) about me. She said, "No, by Allah, I know no fault in her, except that sometimes (due to her youth and heedlessness) she would fall asleep while kneading dough, and the goat would come and eat the kneaded dough." Some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) scolded her, saying, "Why don't you tell the Messenger of Allah the truth as it is?" Then they asked her clearly and explicitly to confirm the incident. She replied, "Glory be to Allah! I know Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) as a goldsmith knows pure gold." When the person who was accused (i.e., Safwan bin Mu'attal) heard of this accusation, he said, "Glory be to Allah! By Allah, I have never uncovered the garment of any (unlawful) woman." Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "Then he attained martyrdom in the path of Allah."
