Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the morning prayer, then turned towards the people and said: A man (from the Children of Israel) was driving his cow, when he mounted it and struck it. The cow (by Allah’s power) said: We animals have not been created for riding. Our creation is for plowing the fields. The people said: Glory be to Allah! A cow speaks? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I believe in this, and so do Abu Bakr and Umar. Even though both of them were not present there. In the same way, a man was grazing his sheep when a wolf came and carried off a sheep from the flock. The shepherd ran and rescued the sheep from the wolf. Upon this, the wolf (by Allah’s power) said: Today you have rescued it from me, but on the day of the beasts (near the Day of Judgment), who will protect it from me, when there will be no shepherd for it except me? The people said: Glory be to Allah! A wolf speaks? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I believe in this, and so do Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Even though both of them were not present there at that time.

Brief Explanation
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had certainty regarding the strength of faith of the two Shaykhs (Abu Bakr and Umar radi Allahu anhuma), which is why he included them in bringing faith upon this matter. Indeed, Allah ta'ala is capable of everything. He granted the cow and the wolf the ability to speak. In this is evidence that animals should be used only for those purposes for which, by custom, they are used. (Fath al-Bari)
