Brief Explanation
Imam Nawawi rahimahullah states in Sharh Muslim that this hadith encourages good character and explains the virtue of those who possess good manners, as good character is the attribute of the Prophets and the Awliya (friends of Allah). Hasan al-Basri rahimahullah says that the reality of good character is to spread goodness, to avoid causing harm, and to approach others with a cheerful countenance. Qadi Iyad states that good character is to maintain relationships with people beautifully and joyfully, to love them, to show compassion towards them, to tolerate them, to deal with them with forbearance, to be patient over their unpleasant words, to abandon arrogance and fault-finding, and to avoid hard-heartedness, anger, and seeking revenge.
