Hadith 1471

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of the knowledge and guidance with which Allah has sent me is like that of a heavy rain which falls upon the earth. Some land is pure and absorbs the water, and produces much grass and vegetation. And some land is hard and holds the water, by which Allah benefits the people; they drink from it and give others to drink. And some water falls on parts of the land which are barren plains; they neither retain the water nor produce any vegetation. This is the example of the one who gains understanding in the religion and benefits from what I have been sent with; he learns and teaches the knowledge of religion. And the example of the one who does not raise his head (i.e., does not pay attention) and does not accept the guidance with which I have been sent (i.e., no one benefits from him). In one narration, the words are: "And among them is a group that retains the water."

Brief Explanation
Imam Nawawi, in his commentary on Sahih Muslim, states: The meaning and purpose of this hadith is to present an example of the guidance which the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) brought as a Messenger. Just as there are three types of land, similarly, there are three types of people. (Arranged)

(1)… The first type of land is that which benefits from rain and becomes lush and green, whereas previously it was barren. Now grass grows, crops flourish, from which people and animals benefit. Likewise, the first type of people are those to whom the guidance of Islam and knowledge has reached; they have memorized it, revived their hearts, act upon it themselves, and also preach to others. They benefit themselves and also benefit others.

(2)… The second type of land is that which does not benefit from the rain itself, but it has one benefit: it retains water for others, from which humans and animals benefit. Similarly, the second type of people are those whose hearts preserve the guidance, but they do not possess foresight and deep understanding, nor is knowledge firmly rooted in their intellects such that they can derive meanings and implications from it. They do not have the strength of ijtihad (independent reasoning) in obedience and action. Thus, they memorize knowledge and guidance, so when a seeker of knowledge and guidance comes to them—one who is capable of benefiting from knowledge—they acquire this knowledge from them.

(3)… The third type of land is that which is barren and saline; it neither produces anything nor benefits from water, nor does it retain water so that others may benefit from it. Similarly, the third type of people are those whose hearts have neither memory nor understanding. When they hear knowledge and guidance, they neither benefit themselves nor preserve it to benefit others. (Arranged)
