Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) used to narrate that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Last night I saw in a dream that there was a piece of cloud from which ghee and honey were dripping. I saw that people were taking it in their hands, some more and some less. And there was a rope hanging from the earth to the sky. I saw that first you (peace and blessings be upon him) came and held it and ascended, then another person held it and he also ascended, then a third person held it and he also ascended, then a fourth person held it and he also ascended by means of it. Then the rope broke, then it was joined again. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you. Allow me to interpret it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Interpret it. He said: The shade refers to the religion of Islam, and the honey and ghee dripping from it is the sweetness of the Holy Qur'an, and some people acquire more of the Qur'an, some less. And the rope from the sky to the earth refers to the true way upon which you (peace and blessings be upon him) are established, you are holding it, until Allah will raise you up by means of it. Then after you, another person, your first caliph, will hold it, and he will also remain firm upon it until his death, then a third person will hold it, and his condition will be the same, then a fourth person will hold it, but his matter of caliphate will be cut off, he will also ascend by means of it. O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, tell me, is the interpretation I have given correct or incorrect? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have interpreted some parts correctly and some parts incorrectly. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Please inform me of my mistake. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not swear.
