1455 صحيح حديث أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لأَنْ يَمْتَلِىءَ جَوفُ رَجُلٍ قَيْحًا يَرِيهِ، خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَمْتَلِىءَ شِعْرًا
Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: If any one of you fills his stomach with pus, it is better for him than to fill it with poetry.
Brief Explanation
The meaning of "being full" here is that, except for poetry, he remembers nothing else. He neither memorizes the Qur'an nor studies hadith. Day and night, he remains absorbed in the pursuit of composing poetry, as is the environment among most poets of this era (except whom Allah wills). (Raaz)
