Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) had a son who was ill. Abu Talha had gone out somewhere when the child passed away. When he (tired and weary) returned, he asked, “How is the child?” His wife, Umm Sulaim (may Allah be pleased with her), replied, “He is more at peace than before.” Then she placed the evening meal before him and Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) ate. After that, he had intercourse with her, and when they were finished, she said, “Bury the child.” In the morning, Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the incident. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Did you have intercourse last night?” He replied, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, “O Allah! Bless both of them.” Then a child was born to them, so Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me to take him carefully to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Accordingly, he was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Umm Sulaim (may Allah be pleased with her) sent some dates along with the child. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the child and asked, “Is there anything with him?” The people said, “Yes, there are dates.” He took them, chewed them, then took them out of his mouth and placed them in the child’s mouth, and thus performed tahneek for the child and named him Abdullah.
