Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a striped (silk) garment being sold at the door of the Prophet’s Mosque. He said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! It would be better if you bought it and wore it on Fridays and when delegations come to meet you.” Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Only the one who has no share in the Hereafter can wear this.” Afterwards, some similar garments came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he gave one of them to Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You are giving me this garment to wear, even though you previously said something about the ‘Atard’ garments.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I did not give it to you to wear yourself.” So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave it to his polytheist brother who lived in Makkah to wear.
