Hazrat Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Tomorrow we will face the enemy and we do not have knives with us?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Then make haste,” or (instead) he said, “Use ‘Arn’,” meaning, make haste with whatever tool causes blood to flow and Allah’s name is mentioned upon the slaughtered animal, then eat it. However, it should not be a tooth or a nail, and I will also tell you the reason for this: the tooth is a bone and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians.” (Rafi’ says) “We received camels and goats as spoils of war, and one of the camels ran away, so a man shot it with an arrow and brought it down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘These camels sometimes run away like wild animals, so if any of them escapes your control, do the same with it.’”
