Hazrat Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that during the Battle of Khaybar, we suffered from repeated hunger. Finally, on the day Khaybar was conquered, we also received domestic donkeys (as spoils of war). So, we slaughtered them and began to cook them. When the pots began to boil, the announcer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proclaimed that the pots should be overturned and nothing from the meat of the domestic donkeys should be eaten. Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that some people said that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade it because the khums (one-fifth share) had not yet been taken from it, but some other companions said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had absolutely declared the meat of the donkey to be forbidden.
