1243 صحيح حديث أَبِي مُوسى رضي الله عنه، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ: الرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِلْمَغْنَمِ، وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِلذِّكْرِ، وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُرَى مَكَانُهُ، فَمَنْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ قَالَ: مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ
Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a companion (Lahik bin Dumayrah) came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: A person participates in battle to gain spoils of war, a person participates in battle for fame, and a person participates in battle so that his bravery becomes renowned—so which of these fights in the way of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever participates in battle with the intention that the word of Allah alone should be exalted, only he fights in the way of Allah.
Brief Explanation
The purpose is that the real thing is sincerity (ikhlas). If this exists, then everything is attained; if it does not, then nothing is attained. On the Day of Judgment, how many generous people, how many reciters (qari), and how many warriors (mujahid) will be cast into Hellfire. These will be those whose only objective was ostentation and showing off. Therefore, they will be cast directly into Hellfire. (Raaz)
