Hadith 1211

Abu Idris Khawlani narrated, he heard from Sayyiduna Hudhaifah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), who used to say that while the other companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about good, I would ask about evil out of fear that I might fall into it. So once I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! We were in a time of ignorance and evil. Then Allah Almighty bestowed upon us this goodness (of Islam). Will there be any evil after this goodness?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes." I asked, "And after that evil, will there be any goodness?" He said, "Yes, but there will be some smoke with that goodness." I asked, "What will that smoke be?" He replied, "There will be people who will adopt ways other than my Sunnah and my path. Among them, some things will be good and some will be bad." I asked, "Will there be evil after that goodness as well?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes, there will be callers at the gates of Hell; whoever accepts their call, they will throw him into Hell." I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Please describe them for us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "They will be from our own people and religion, and they will speak our language." I asked, "What do you command me to do if I reach that time?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Stay with the group of Muslims and their Imam." I asked, "And if there is no group of Muslims and no Imam?" He said, "Then keep yourself away from all those sects, even if you have to bite the root of a tree, until death comes to you while you are in that state. (That will be better for you than being in their company.)"
