Hadith 1204

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys me has disobeyed Allah. And whoever obeys the leader appointed by me has obeyed me, and whoever disobeys my appointed leader has disobeyed me. (But if the leader's command is against the Qur'an and Hadith, then it should be abandoned and the Qur'an and Hadith should be followed.)

Brief Explanation
But if the command of the leader is contrary to the Qur’an and Hadith, then it must be abandoned and one must act upon the Qur’an and Hadith. (Raaz) The way the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has associated obedience to the leaders with obedience to himself, and the manner in which he has emphasized their status and respect, Imam Khattabi, while explaining its reason, states that the Quraysh and their Arab followers and allies were not familiar with leadership, and they would not accept the obedience and following of anyone except the chiefs of their own tribes. When Islam came and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam appointed leaders and governors over them, this was unpleasant to them, and some refused to follow. So the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam explained to them that their obedience is connected to my obedience, and their disobedience is connected to my disobedience. In this way, he encouraged them to obey the leaders so that the word (kalimah) would remain united and the fabric of the Ummah would not be torn apart. (Murattab)
