Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In this (matter of caliphate), people follow the Quraysh; the common Muslims follow the Qurayshi Muslims just as their common disbelievers have always followed the Qurayshi disbelievers.

Brief Explanation
That is, in caliphate and leadership, people are followers and adherents of the Quraysh, because they possess superiority over others. According to one opinion, this statement is in the sense of a command and ordinance, meaning that Muslims should follow and obey the Qurayshi Muslims, and it is not permissible to rebel against them, while the disbelieving Quraysh will be followed by the disbelievers. Imam Kirmani states that this describes their previous state, that in the time of disbelief they were indeed leaders and guides. The Arabs used to consider the Quraysh as superior and, due to their residence in the Haram, would honor them. When the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was sent and invited to Islam, most of the Arabs hesitated to follow you and said, “We will wait and see how your own people treat you.” Then, when Makkah was conquered and the Quraysh accepted Islam, the Arabs followed them and began entering Islam in multitudes. Thereafter, the caliphate also remained among the Quraysh. Thus, it is true that the disbelieving Quraysh were followed by the disbelievers, and the believing Quraysh became the leaders of the Muslims. (Compiled)
