Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about luqatah (a lost item found on the way). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Examine its pouch and its binding thoroughly. Then announce it for a year. If its owner comes during this period (then give it to him), otherwise, it becomes yours. The questioner asked: And what about a lost goat? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is yours, or your brother’s, or the wolf’s. The questioner asked: And what about a lost camel? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What concern do you have with it? It has its water container with it and its home. It can reach water and eat from the trees until its owner finds it.
