Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever introduces into our religion something that is not part of it, it will be rejected.

Brief Explanation
This hadith is the fundamental principle of the Shari‘ah. It completely refutes all those innovations (bid‘at) that people have introduced into the religion, such as reciting Fatiha (for the deceased), the third-day, fortieth-day rituals, the halwa of Shab-e-Barat, the kichra of Muharram, taziya, mawlid, urs, placing cloth coverings and flowers on graves, and so on. These matters are counted among innovations because there is no evidence of their existence in the time of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the Companions (radi Allahu anhum), or the Followers (tabi‘in).
