Hadith 1101

Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that indeed Allah Almighty sent Muhammad (peace be upon him) with the truth and revealed the Book to him. Among what was revealed to him in the Book of Allah was the verse of stoning (rajm). We read it, understood it, and memorized it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) himself carried out stoning (rajm) during his time. After him, we also carried out stoning. But I fear that if time continues to pass, someone may claim that they do not find the verse of stoning in the Book of Allah, and thus they may go astray by abandoning an obligation which Allah Almighty has revealed. Surely, the command of stoning is established from the Book of Allah for the person who commits adultery after marriage, whether men or women, provided that the testimony is complete, or pregnancy becomes evident, or the person confesses himself.

Brief Explanation
By this is meant the verse: "Al-shaykh wal-shaykhah idha zanaya farjumuhuma al-battah"—that when a married man and woman commit adultery, then certainly stone them to death. Then its wording was abrogated, but the ruling remained. The ruling of stoning (rajm) is true and established from within the Noble Qur'an. Allah Ta'ala's statement: "aw yaj‘al Allahu lahunna sabilan"—that Allah will make a way out for them—was clarified by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who explained that what is meant by this is stoning for the married person and flogging for the unmarried. In Musnad Ahmad, it is narrated from Hudhayfah ibn al-Samit radi Allahu anhu that one day Allah Ta'ala sent down revelation upon the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and when the state of revelation ended, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Understand this issue from me and hold to it firmly. Indeed, Allah Ta'ala has determined a way for them: if a married person commits adultery with a married person, then the married person will be flogged one hundred lashes and stoned with stones, and if an unmarried person commits adultery, he will be flogged one hundred lashes and then exiled for one year."
