Lu'lu' wal-Marjan

Bashir bin Yasar, the freed slave of the Ansar, narrated from Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) and Muhayyisah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Khaybar and separated from each other in a date orchard. Abdullah bin Sahl was killed there. Then Abdur Rahman bin Sahl and the two sons of Mas’ud, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah, came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and spoke about the case of their murdered companion (Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him). First, Abdur Rahman wanted to speak, who was the youngest among them. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Give precedence to the elder.” (Yahya, who is a narrator in the chain, explained that this means the elder should speak.) Then they spoke about the case of their companion. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If fifty (50) men among you swear an oath that Abdullah was killed by the Jews, then you will be entitled to the blood money.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah! We did not see it ourselves (so how can we swear about it)?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Then the Jews will be acquitted by making fifty of their men swear an oath.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah! They are disbelieving people (how can we trust their oath)?” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself paid the blood money to the heirs of Abdullah bin Sahl. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that among the camels (which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave them as blood money), I caught hold of a she-camel, she entered the herd, and she kicked me.
