Hazrat Zahdam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that we were present in the gathering of Hazrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) (food was brought and) the mention of chicken came up. A man of red complexion from the “Bani Taimullah” was present there. He was probably from among the freed slaves. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) also invited him to eat. He said, “Once I saw a chicken eating filthy things, so I felt great aversion and swore that I would never eat chicken meat again.” Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Come closer, (regarding your oath) I will narrate to you a hadith on this subject. Taking some people from the Ash’ari tribe with me, I went to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (for the expedition of Tabuk) and requested mounts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘By Allah! I cannot arrange mounts for you, because I do not have anything that could serve as your mount.’ Then some camels from the spoils of war were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he inquired about us and said, ‘Where are the people of the Ash’ari tribe?’ Thus, he ordered that five camels be given to us, which were healthy and fat. When we set out, we said among ourselves that the inappropriate way we had adopted would not bring any blessing in this gift from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So we again went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, ‘When we first requested you, you swore that you could not arrange mounts for us. Perhaps you have forgotten that oath.’ But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘I truly did not arrange mounts for you; it is Allah, the Exalted, who has given you these mounts. By Allah! You must believe that, insha’Allah, whenever I take an oath and then it becomes clear to me that something else is better and more appropriate, then I will do that which is better and will offer expiation for my oath.’
