Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that my companions sent me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so that I could request riding animals for them from him. They wanted to participate with you in the army of hardship (i.e., the expedition of Tabuk). I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! My companions have sent me to you so that you may arrange riding animals for them." He said, "By Allah! I cannot provide you with riding animals." When I presented myself before you, you were angry, and I could not realize it. I returned very saddened by your refusal. I was also afraid that perhaps you had become displeased because of my request for riding animals. I went back to my companions and informed them of the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but not much time had passed when I heard the voice of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), who was calling out, "O Abdullah bin Qais!" I replied, and he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is calling you. I presented myself before you, and you said, "Take these two pairs and these two pairs of camels." You granted six camels. You had just bought these camels from Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) at that time and said, "Give them to your companions and tell them that Allah Almighty has given them to you," or you said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has given them to you for your riding, so ride upon them." I took those camels to my companions and said to them, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has granted these for your riding, but by Allah! Now you will have to go to those companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who heard the refusal of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), lest you think that I have told you something incorrect regarding the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." They said, "We have no doubt about your truthfulness, but if you insist, we will do so." Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) took some of them and went to those companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who had heard that statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that at first the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had refused, but then he granted. Those companions (may Allah be pleased with them) also narrated the hadith in the same way as Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated from them.
