Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when a deceased person who owed a debt was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would ask, "Has he left anything with which to pay off his debt?" If someone informed him that yes, there was enough wealth to pay the debt, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would lead the funeral prayer. Otherwise, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say to the Muslims, "Offer the prayer for your companion." Then, when Allah Almighty opened the doors of victory for him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said, "I am more entitled to the believers than their own selves. Therefore, if any Muslim passes away and leaves a debt, its payment is my responsibility, and if any Muslim leaves wealth, it is the right of his heirs."
