Hadith 1034

Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, people used to conduct Salam transactions in dates for two or three years. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed them that whoever wants to conduct a Salam sale should specify a fixed weight and a fixed period.

Brief Explanation
For example, if it is agreed that grain of such-and-such weight will be taken from you for 100 rupees exactly three months from today, and the buyer pays the 100 rupees immediately at that time, this is a sale by advance payment (bay‘ salam), which is permissible. Now, upon completion of the specified period, the seller must deliver the grain of the specified weight to the buyer. (Raaz)
