Hadith 13059
Asim bin Laqit says: Indeed, Sayyiduna Laqit set out towards the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and with him was a companion whose name was Naheek bin Asim bin Malik bin Muntafiq. Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: My companion and I set out towards the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, after the month of Rajab had passed. When we arrived there, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had just finished the morning prayer. He stood up and addressed the people, saying: O people! Beware! For four days I have kept my voice hidden from you, but now I must speak to you. Beware! Is there anyone among you whom his people have sent here and said, “Remember whatever the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, says”? Beware! Perhaps this man may be distracted by his own thoughts, or by something his companion says, or by misguidance. Beware! I will be questioned as to whether I have conveyed these words to you or not. Beware! Listen carefully! You will live for a long time after me. Beware! Sit down, beware! Sit down.

Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: Upon hearing this command of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the people sat down, but my companion and I remained standing. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had finished with everyone else and turned his full attention to us, I said: O Messenger of Allah! What knowledge of the unseen do you possess? By Allah! Upon hearing my words, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, smiled, then he moved his head and realized that I wanted to ask him something that was not within his knowledge. Then he said: Your Lord has kept the keys to five things of the unseen with Himself; no one knows them except Him. At the same time, he gestured with his hand to indicate five. I asked: What are those things? He said: (1) The knowledge of death—He knows the time of your death, but you do not know it; (2) The knowledge of what is in the womb—when it is in the mother’s womb, He knows everything about its future, but you do not know it; (3) The knowledge of tomorrow, that is, the future—what you will eat tomorrow, you do not know about it; (4) He has knowledge of rain—when He looks upon you while you are confined, burdened, and fearful (due to lack of rain), He laughs at your condition, knowing that your relief is near. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Lord who laughs, we will not be deprived of His mercies. And (5) the knowledge of the Hour (the Day of Judgment).

I said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach us from what you teach the people and from the knowledge you possess. I have come from among people who do not affirm you as we do—one is the tribe of Madhhij, who live above us, and the other is the tribe of Khath’am, who are our allies, and likewise our own tribe, from which we come. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: As long as Allah wills, you will remain in this world, then your Prophet will pass away, and after that you will remain here as long as Allah wills. Then a mighty cry will be heard, by whose intensity everything on the face of the earth will perish, even the angels who are with your Lord will die. Your Lord will roam the earth, and all regions will be emptied of souls. Then your Lord will loosen the sky, and rain will fall near the Throne. As a result, wherever a slain person has fallen or a dead person is buried, their graves will burst open, until they rise up and sit straight from the head side. Your Lord will ask them: What has happened? Upon coming into this new state from their previous condition, they will say: O my Lord! Today this day has come upon me. Since they have lived before, they will consider it a means to meet their families.

I said: O Messenger of Allah! After our death, when the winds, decay, and wild beasts have scattered us to pieces, how will Allah gather us again? He said: I will explain to you with an example from the signs of Allah. You see the earth, how it becomes hard and barren, and you think it will never be revived. Then your Lord sends down rain, and after a few days you see it has become green with vegetation. By Allah! For Allah, creating these people from water is easier than growing and producing the plants of the earth. These people will be coming out from between the winds and the graves, and you will see Allah and He will see you.

I said: O Messenger of Allah! The whole earth will be filled with people, and Allah will be in one place, so how will it be possible for us to see Him and for Him to see us all at once? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I will explain to you with an example from the creation of Allah. The sun and the moon are small signs of Allah; you see them and they see you at the same time, and you have no difficulty in seeing them. By Allah! Just as you have no difficulty in seeing the sun and the moon, and they have no difficulty in seeing you, on that day you will be able to see Allah and He will see you even more easily.

Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! When we meet our Lord, how will He treat us? He said: You will all be presented before Him, and none of your faces will be hidden from Him. Then your Lord will take a handful of water and throw it towards you. By Allah! Not a single drop of it will miss your faces. As many Muslims as there are, their faces will become soft, smooth, and radiant due to the blessing of that water, and that water will make the noses of the disbelievers as black as coal. After that, your Prophet will go to one side, and the righteous will follow him, walking over a bridge of fire. Then some of you will tread on the embers of the fire and cry out in pain. After that, you will be extremely thirsty and will reach the Hawd (Pond) of Kawthar of your Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. By Allah! There will be so much water to drink that I have never seen so much water before. By Allah! Whoever among you reaches out for water, a cup full of water will be placed before him. That water will purify him from excrement, urine, and other impurities. The sun and the moon will be held back, and you will not see either of them.

Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Then how will we see? He said: At that time, you will see just as you see now. It will be like the state when, just before sunrise, the light of the sun falls on the mountains and the earth becomes illuminated.

Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! How will we be recompensed for our sins and good deeds? He said: For every good deed, you will receive ten times its reward, and for every sin, you will receive its equivalent punishment, unless Allah forgives it.

I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is Paradise and Hell? He said: By Allah! Hell has seven gates, and the distance between every two gates is such that a rider would take seventy years to cross it. Paradise has eight gates, and the distance between every two gates is also such that a rider would take seventy years to cross it.

I said: O Messenger of Allah! What will we see in Paradise? He said: There will be rivers of clear, pure honey flowing, and there will be rivers of excellent wine, after drinking which there will be no headache or regret, and there will be rivers of pure milk, whose taste will never change, and rivers of water, which will never become stale. By Allah! There will be fruits there that you know (by name), and others even better than them, and there will be pure wives.

I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will our wives be with us in Paradise, or only the righteous among them? He said: For the righteous, there will be righteous wives. You will enjoy them there as you enjoy them in this world, and they will enjoy you, but there will be no childbirth.

I said: Then everything we could possibly desire will be there? Upon hearing this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not reply.

I said: O Messenger of Allah! On what matters should I pledge allegiance to you? He spread out his hand and said: On performing the prayers regularly, giving zakat, keeping away from polytheists, and that you will not associate anyone with Allah. Pledge allegiance on all these matters.

I said: As a result, will the whole land from east to west, that is, the entire face of the earth, be ours? Upon hearing this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, withdrew his hand. He thought that perhaps I was about to make a condition that he could not promise me. I said: We will go wherever we wish on the earth, but everyone will be responsible for himself? He said: Every person is responsible for what he does himself. Then he spread out his hand again and said: You are permitted to go wherever you wish on the earth, and you are not responsible for anyone else’s deeds.

Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: After that, we returned from the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then he said: By Allah! These two individuals are the most pious in this world and the Hereafter. Upon hearing this, a man from Banu Bakr bin Kilab, Ka’b bin Khudriyah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: O Messenger of Allah! Who are these people? He said: They are Banu Muntafiq, and they are worthy of it.

Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: After that, we returned again to the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Those who passed away before us in the time of ignorance, will any of them have a good end? At this, an ordinary Qurayshi man said: By Allah, your father Muntafiq is surely in Hell. Upon hearing this, I was enraged that he had said such a thing about my father publicly. I intended to say: O Messenger of Allah! What will become of your father? Then I thought that saying this in response would be even greater ignorance. Then I said: O Messenger of Allah! Where will your family be? He said: My family—by Allah! Whenever you pass by the grave of any polytheist from Quraysh or Banu Amir, say: Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has sent me to you. I bring you news that will grieve and sadden you: you will be dragged on your face and belly into Hell.

Sayyiduna Laqit, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Why will this be their end? They did whatever they did thinking it was good; they thought they were doing the right thing. He said: Because Allah sent a prophet at the end of every seven nations. Whoever disobeyed his prophet was among the misguided, and whoever obeyed his prophet was among the guided.
