What Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated regarding tribulations, including the hadiths beginning with the Prophet's (peace be upon him) words: "The Hour will not be established..."

8 hadith
Hadith 12877
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Among all people, I have the most knowledge about the tribulations that will occur from today until the Day of Resurrection. The reason for this is not that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me secret things that he did not tell others. The matter is that in one gathering, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about tribulations, and I was also present in that assembly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to enumerate and explain the tribulations. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among them, there will be three tribulations that, due to their severity, will leave nothing untouched. Some tribulations will be like the summer winds, and some will be small, and some will be large. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: All the people who were present in that gathering have passed away; only I am alive.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah informed me about (important events and tribulations) that will occur until the Day of Judgment. I have already asked him about every such thing, except that I did not ask what thing will drive the people of Madinah out of Madinah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us and mentioned every event that would occur until the Day of Resurrection. Those who remembered them, remembered them, and those who forgot, forgot them. I myself see many such things which I had forgotten, but when I see them, I remember them, just as a man recognizes a person whom he had forgotten when he sees him after his absence.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: O Messenger of Allah! We were in the evil of disbelief, Allah Almighty removed that evil and brought goodness (and the religion of Islam) through your hands. Now the question is, will there be evil again after this goodness? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. He asked: What will that be? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There will be tribulations, which will come one after another like pieces of a dark night, and they will resemble each other like the faces of cows, and you will not be able to distinguish between them.

Rabi’ bin Hirash says that when Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Yesterday, when we were sitting with him, he asked the companions, “Who among you has heard anything from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about tribulations (fitan)?” All said: Yes, we have heard such hadiths from you (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Perhaps you think from my question that I am asking about the tribulation concerning a man’s family and wealth? They said: Yes, that is what we thought. He said: I am not asking about that; such tribulations are wiped away by good deeds like prayer, fasting, and charity. Tell me, has any of you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about those tribulations which will come like the waves of the sea? Upon hearing this question, the people fell silent. I thought he was asking me, so I said: Shall I explain? He said: May Allah bless your father, you explain. I said: Tribulations will appear like the spreading of a mat; the heart that remains safe from these tribulations will have a white dot placed in it, and the heart that becomes involved in this tribulation will have a black dot placed in it, until, as the dots accumulate, hearts will become of two kinds: some hearts will become completely white like stone, and as long as the heavens and the earth remain, no tribulation will harm them; and some will become black and overturned like a jug, and with this, he turned his palm over to clarify the matter. They will not recognize good as good or evil as evil, and will be engrossed only in their desires. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I also told Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that you have no need to fear these tribulations, because there is a closed door between you and them; yes, it is possible that it will be broken forcefully. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May your father perish, will it be broken? I said: Yes. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If it is opened properly, then perhaps it could be closed again at some time. I said: It will not be opened, but rather it will be broken. I also explained to him that by this door is meant a person who will be killed or will die a natural death; this is a hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), not mere stories.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he asked: Does anyone among you remember any hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding tribulations? I said: Yes, I remember a hadith about tribulation. He said: You are bold in narrating the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about tribulation. I said: The tribulations in which a person is involved regarding his family, wealth, children, and neighbors, acts of goodness such as prayer, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil become expiation for such tribulations. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am not asking about such tribulation, my question is about that tribulation which will come like the waves of the sea. I said: O Commander of the Faithful! You do not need to fear that, between you and it there is a closed door. He asked: Will that door be broken or opened? I said: Rather, it will be broken. He said: Then it will never be closed again. We asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah whether Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) knew who was meant by the door? He said: Yes, he knew the door just as he knew that night comes before tomorrow. Waki’ narrated in his hadith: Masruq said to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Abdullah! Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) explain to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the reality and meaning of what he told him? While we asked: Did Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) know who the door was? Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied that he knew it just as he knew that night comes before tomorrow. Remember, I have stated these facts, these are not mere stories. At first, we did not dare to ask Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) who was meant by the door. Then we said to Masruq that he should ask him about it, so when he asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he informed that by the door was meant Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

People came out to confront him and drove him back. Abu Thawr says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I did not think that these people would turn back just like that without blood being shed. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I certainly knew that these people would turn back just like that, and not even as much blood would be shed in this campaign as is drawn in cupping. And I came to know of this at the time when Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was alive, (such a situation would also arise that a man would begin the morning in a state of faith, but by evening nothing of that faith would remain with him; similarly, a man would spend the evening in a state of faith, but by morning nothing of faith would remain with him. His army would fight with someone today, and the next day Allah Almighty would kill him, turning his heart in such a way that his backside would be on top). I said: Its lower side? He replied: Its backside.
