مَنْعُ أَهْلِ الذَّمَّةِ أَدَاءَ الْجِزْيَةِ
The refusal of the People of the Covenant to pay the jizya
Hadith 12874
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ: كَيْفَ أَنْتُمْ إِذَا لَمْ تَجْتَبُوا دِينَارًا وَلَا دِرْهَمًا؟ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: وَهَلْ تَرَى ذَلِكَ كَائِنًا يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ؟ فَقَالَ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ بِيَدِهِ! عَنْ قَوْلِ الصَّادِقِ الْمَصْدُوقِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالُوا: وَعَمَّ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: تُنْتَهَكُ ذِمَّةُ اللَّهِ وَذِمَّةُ رَسُولِهِ فَيَشُدُّ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَ أَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ فَيَمْنَعُونَ مَا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ بِيَدِهِ لَيَكُونَنَّ مَرَّتَيْنِ“
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: What will be your condition when you will no longer receive (jizyah) dinars and dirhams? Someone asked him: O Abu Hurairah! Do you think this will happen? He said: Yes, by Him in Whose hand is the life of Abu Hurairah! This is the statement of the Truthful and Trusted One, peace and blessings be upon him. The people asked: Why will this happen? He said: When the covenant of Allah and His Messenger is not upheld, as a result Allah Almighty will harden the hearts of the dhimmis and thus they will withhold what is in their hands. By Him in Whose hand is the life of Abu Hurairah! This will certainly happen. He repeated this statement twice.
Hadith 12875
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ آخَرَ) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”مَنَعَتِ الْعِرَاقُ قَفِيزَهَا وَدِرْهَمَهَا، وَمَنَعَتِ الشَّامُ مُدَّهَا وَدِينَارَهَا، وَمُنِعَتْ مِصْرُ إِرْدَبَّهَا وَدِينَارَهَا، وَعُدْتُّمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ بَدَأْتُمْ وَعُدْتُّمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ بَدَأْتُمْ“ يَشْهَدُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ لَحْمُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَدَمُهُ
(Second chain) Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (A time will come) when the people of Iraq will withhold their qafiz and dirham, Syria its mudd and dinar, and Egypt its irdabb and dinar, and you will return to where you began, and you will return to where you started. The flesh and blood of Abu Hurairah bears witness to this truth.
Hadith 12876
عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ قَالَ كُنَّا عِنْدَ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ يُوشِكُ أَهْلُ الْعِرَاقِ أَلَّا يُجْبَى إِلَيْهِمْ قَفِيزٌ وَلَا دِرْهَمٌ قُلْنَا مِنْ أَيْنَ ذَاكَ قَالَ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْعَجَمِ يَمْنَعُونَ ذَاكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ يُوشِكُ أَهْلُ الشَّامِ أَنْ لَا يُجْبَى إِلَيْهِمْ دِينَارٌ وَلَا مُدٌّ قُلْنَا مِنْ أَيْنَ ذَاكَ قَالَ مِنْ قِبَلِ الرُّومِ يَمْنَعُونَ ذَاكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَمْسَكَ هُنَيَّةً ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”يَكُونُ فِي آخِرِ أُمَّتِي خَلِيفَةٌ يَحْثُو الْمَالَ حَثْوًا لَا يَعُدُّهُ عَدًّا“ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي نَضْرَةَ وَأَبِي الْعَلَاءِ أَتَرَيَانِ أَنَّهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ فَقَالَا لَا
Abu Nadrah says: We were with Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: It is near that the import of qafeez and dirham to the people of Iraq will be stopped. We asked: How will this happen? He said: From the side of the non-Arabs, (a time will come when) they will stop it. Then he said: It is near that the import of dinar and mudd to the people of Sham will be stopped. We asked: How will this happen? He said: From the Romans, (a time will come when) they will stop it. After that, he paused for a little while and then said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In the last part of my Ummah, there will be a caliph who will give out handfuls of wealth to the people and will not count it. I asked Abu Nadrah and Abu Alaa: What do you think, could he be Umar bin Abdul Aziz? They said: No.
