الْفَضْلُ الرَّابِعُ مَنْ زَادَ فِي مَسْجِدِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم
The fourth section regarding those who expanded the Prophet's Mosque (peace be upon him)
Hadith 12686
عَنْ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعٌ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ الْمَسْجِدَ كَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَبْنِيًّا بِاللَّبِنِ، وَسَقْفُهُ الْجَرِيدُ، وَعُمُدُهُ خَشَبُ النَّخْلِ، فَلَمْ يَزِدْ فِيهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ شَيْئًا، وَزَادَ فِيهِ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَبَنَاهُ عَلَى بِنَائِهِ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِاللَّبِنِ وَالْجَرِيدِ، وَأَعَادَ عُمُدَهُ خَشَبًا، ثُمَّ غَيَّرَهُ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَزَادَ فِيهِ زِيَادَةً كَثِيرَةً، وَبَنَى جِدَارَهُ بِالْحِجَارَةِ الْمَنْقُوشَةِ وَالْقَصَّةِ، وَجَعَلَ عُمُدَهُ مِنْ حِجَارَةٍ مَنْقُوشَةٍ، وَسَقْفَهُ بِالسَّاجِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet’s Mosque was built of bricks, its roof was made of palm branches, and its pillars were of palm trunks. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not make any additions to it during his time. However, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) rebuilt it and raised its foundations on the same foundations as in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he built it with bricks and palm branches, and its pillars were made of wood. Later, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) rebuilt it and greatly expanded it; he plastered its walls with decorated stones, made its pillars of decorated stones, and its roof of teak wood.
Hadith 12687
(وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا) أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ زَادَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مِنَ الْأُسْطُوَانَةِ إِلَى الْمَقْصُورَةِ، وَزَادَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، وَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ”نَبْغِي نَزِيدُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا“ مَا زِدْتُ فِيهِ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) extended the Prophet’s Mosque from the well-known pillar to the enclosure (stone), and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) also extended it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I had not heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that we wish to expand our mosque, I would not have expanded it.
