Hadith 12512
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We returned from a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we passed by the mosque of Banu Mu’awiyah. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque and performed two units of prayer, and we also prayed with him. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated to Allah for a long time. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I asked my Lord for three things. I asked that Allah not destroy my ummah by drowning; Allah accepted my prayer. I asked that He not destroy my ummah by famine; Allah also accepted this prayer. I asked that there not be discord among them; Allah did not accept this prayer.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during a journey, that he performed eight rak‘ahs of prayer at the time of Duha. After completing the prayer, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Today I have prayed with utmost eagerness and fear of Allah. I made three supplications to my Lord; He accepted two of my supplications and did not accept one. I supplicated that He would not afflict my Ummah with famine, and He accepted it. Then I supplicated that their enemy would not overpower them, and He accepted this supplication as well. And I supplicated that there would be no discord among them, but Allah, the Exalted, did not accept this supplication of mine.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khabbab bin Al-Aratt, who was a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and participated in the Battle of Badr. He says: Once, I kept watch over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the entire night. He spent the whole night in prayer. When he finished the prayer at the time of Fajr, I came to him and said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, tonight you have performed such a prayer that I have never seen you pray like this before. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, this was a prayer of utmost longing and fear of Allah. I made three supplications to my Lord, the Exalted, and He accepted two and rejected one. I prayed to my Lord, the Exalted, that He would not destroy us with the punishments with which He destroyed the previous nations, and He accepted this supplication. And I prayed to my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, that He would not let our enemies prevail over us, and He accepted this supplication as well. And I prayed to my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, that He would not cause discord among us, but He did not accept this supplication.

I supplicated to Allah Almighty that He would not gather my Ummah upon misguidance, and He accepted this supplication of mine. My second supplication was that, just as He destroyed the previous nations through famine, He would not destroy my Ummah in this way; He accepted this as well. And I also supplicated that He would not cause discord among my Ummah, but He did not accept this supplication of mine.

Hadith 12518
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas bin Mirdas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made many supplications for forgiveness and mercy for his Ummah on the evening of Arafah. Allah Almighty said: I have accepted your supplications and I have forgiven your Ummah, except that if anyone among the people wrongs another, this crime will not be forgiven. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O my Lord! You are able to forgive the oppressor and grant the oppressed recompense from Yourself equal to the oppression he suffered. That night only this much happened. When the next day came and you (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Muzdalifah in the morning, you again made supplications for your Ummah. Suddenly, you (peace and blessings be upon him) began to smile. A companion said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, you have smiled at a time when you do not usually smile. May Allah keep you smiling, what is the reason for this smile? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I smiled at the condition of Allah’s enemy, Iblis. When he found out that Allah Almighty had accepted my supplication for my Ummah and had promised to forgive even the oppressor, he began to raise his hands and lament his destruction and ruin, and started throwing dust on his head. So I smiled at his distress and anxiety.
