Hadith 12236
عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ كَيْفَ بَايَعْتُمْ عُثْمَانَ وَتَرَكْتُمْ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ مَا ذَنْبِي قَدْ بَدَأْتُ بِعَلِيٍّ فَقُلْتُ أُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَسُنَّةِ رَسُولِهِ وَسِيرَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ فَقَالَ فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُ قَالَ ثُمَّ عَرَضْتُهَا عَلَى عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَبِلَهَا
It is narrated from Abu Wa'il, he says: I said to Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him): How did it happen that you people pledged allegiance to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) instead of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: What fault was mine in this? I first went to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I pledge allegiance to you in the light of the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the way of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: Fine, but according to my ability. Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I presented this condition to Sayyiduna Uthman, and he accepted it.
