It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi’ah that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab set out for Syria. When he reached the place of Sargh, he received information that an epidemic (of plague) had spread in Syria. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you hear that an epidemic of plague has spread in a region, do not go there, and when you are present in a region and the epidemic spreads there, then do not leave that place out of fear of it. Upon hearing this hadith, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) thanked Allah and returned from the place of Sargh.
