Hadith 12018
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَجَعِهِ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ فِيهِ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ كَيْفَ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَصْبَحَ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ بَارِئًا قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ عَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَرَى أَنْتَ وَاللَّهِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَيُتَوَفَّى فِي وَجَعِهِ هَذَا إِنِّي أَعْرِفُ وُجُوهَ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ فَاذْهَبْ بِنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلْنَسْأَلْهُ فِيمَنْ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ فَإِنْ كَانَ فِينَا عَلِمْنَا ذَلِكَ وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي غَيْرِنَا كَلَّمْنَاهُ فَأَوْصَى بِنَا فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ سَأَلْنَاهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَنَعَنَاهَا لَا يُعْطِينَاهَا النَّاسُ أَبَدًا فَوَاللَّهِ لَا أَسْأَلُهُ أَبَدًا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the days of the Messenger of Allah’s (peace and blessings be upon him) final illness, one day Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out from his presence. The people asked: O Abu al-Hasan! How is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: All praise is due to Allah, he is better. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) took his hand and said: Do you not see? By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will pass away in this illness of his. I recognize the faces of the sons of Abdul Muttalib before death befalls them—what their condition is. Come, let us go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him about this matter (of caliphate). If it is our right, we will know it, and if it concerns someone else, we will ask about it, so that he (peace and blessings be upon him) may make a will in our favor. Upon hearing this, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If we ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) about this and he deprives us of it, then people will never give us this right. Therefore, by Allah! I will not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) anything about this.
Hadith 12019
عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَعْهَدْ إِلَيْنَا عَهْدًا نَأْخُذُ بِهِ فِي الْإِمَارَةِ وَلَكِنَّهُ شَيْءٌ رَأَيْنَاهُ مِنْ قِبَلِ أَنْفُسِنَا ثُمَّ اسْتُخْلِفَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَأَقَامَ وَاسْتَقَامَ ثُمَّ اسْتُخْلِفَ عُمَرُ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى عُمَرَ فَأَقَامَ وَاسْتَقَامَ حَتَّى ضَرَبَ الدِّينُ بِجِرَانِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said on the day of the Battle of Jamal: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not say anything to us regarding leadership (caliphate), rather this is a matter which we—the Ummah—chose by our own judgment, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was selected as caliph; may Allah have mercy on him. He fulfilled his responsibility excellently. After him, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was selected as caliph, and he too fulfilled his responsibility so well that Islam prevailed over the entire earth.
Hadith 12020
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَنْ يُؤَمَّرُ بَعْدَكَ قَالَ ”إِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَجِدُوهُ أَمِينًا زَاهِدًا فِي الدُّنْيَا رَاغِبًا فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَإِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَجِدُوهُ قَوِيًّا أَمِينًا لَا يَخَافُ فِي اللَّهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ وَإِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَلَا أُرَاكُمْ فَاعِلِينَ تَجِدُوهُ هَادِيًا مَهْدِيًّا يَأْخُذُ بِكُمُ الطَّرِيقَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was asked from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "After you, whom should we appoint as the leader?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you appoint Abu Bakr as the leader, you will find him such that he will have no desire for the world and will have longing for the Hereafter. If you appoint Umar as the leader, you will find him strong and trustworthy, who will not care about the blame of any blamer regarding Allah. And if you appoint Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as the leader, you will find him a guide and rightly guided, who will lead you to the straight path. But I think you will not appoint him as the caliph."
Hadith 12021
عَنْ قَيْسٍ الْخَارِفِيِّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ: سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ، ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ أَصَابَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ، فَكَانَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ، (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: يَعْفُو اللَّهُ عَمَّنْ يَشَاءُ).
Qais Kharfi says: I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying on this pulpit: First, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world. After him, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the Ummah in prayers. Third came Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). After him, we were overtaken by trials and tribulations, then whatever Allah willed, happened. In another narration it is stated: Allah will forgive whomever He wills.
Hadith 12022
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ آخَرَ) بِمِثْلِهِ وَفِيهِ: ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا أَوْ أَصَابَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ فَمَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ جَلَّ جَلَالُهُ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: قَالَ أَبِي قَوْلُهُ: ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ، أَرَادَ أَنْ يَتَوَاضَعَ بِذَلِكَ.
(Second chain) There is a similar narration, except that in it: After those gentlemen, trials befell us, then what Allah Almighty willed, happened. Abu Abdur Rahman says: My father said that when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that after those gentlemen, trials befell us, he said this out of humility.
Hadith 12023
عَنْ سَهْلٍ أَبِي الْأَسَدِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي بُكَيْرُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ الْجَزَرِيُّ، قَالَ: قَالَ لِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ: أُحَدِّثُكَ حَدِيثًا مَا أُحَدِّثُهُ كُلَّ أَحَدٍ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ عَلَى بَابِ الْبَيْتِ وَنَحْنُ فِيهِ، فَقَالَ: ”الْأَئِمَّةُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَقًّا، وَلَكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ حَقًّا مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ مَا إِنِ اسْتُرْحِمُوا فَرَحِمُوا، وَإِنْ عَاهَدُوا وَفَوْا، وَإِنْ حَكَمُوا عَدَلُوا، فَمَنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ.“
Bukair bin Wahb Jazari narrates: Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: I will narrate to you a hadith which I have not narrated to anyone else. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the door of this house and we were also in that house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The rulers will be from among the Quraysh. You have rights upon them and likewise, they have rights upon you. If mercy is sought from them, they will show mercy. When they make a promise to anyone, they will fulfill it, and when they judge, they will judge with justice and fairness. If any of them fails to fulfill these responsibilities, then upon him will be the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people.
Hadith 12024
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ آخَرَ) عَنْ سَهْلٍ أَبِي الْأَسَدِ، عَنْ بُكَيْرٍ الْجَزَرِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: كُنَّا فِي بَيْتِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى وَقَفَ فَأَخَذَ بِعِضَادَةِ الْبَابِ فَقَالَ: ”الْأَئِمَّةُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ … الخ.“
(Second chain) Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were once in the house of an Ansari, when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. He came and, holding the side of the doorframe, stood and said: The rulers will be from among the Quraysh, ... .
Hadith 12025
حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارُ بْنُ سَلَامَةَ، سَمِعَ أَبَا بَرْزَةَ، يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”الْأَئِمَّةُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، إِذَا اسْتُرْحِمُوا رَحِمُوا وَإِذَا عَاهَدُوا وَفَوْا، وَإِذَا حَكَمُوا عَدَلُوا، فَمَنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ.“
I heard from Sayyiduna Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrated from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The caliphs and rulers will be from among the Quraysh. When mercy is sought from them, they will show mercy; when they make a promise to anyone, they will fulfill it; and when they make judgments, they will do so with justice and fairness. If anyone among them does not fulfill these responsibilities, then upon him will be the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.
Hadith 12026
عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: كَانَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّهُ بَلَغَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، وَهُوَ عِنْدَهُ فِي وَفْدٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ مَلِكٌ مِنْ قَحْطَانَ، فَغَضِبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ، فَقَامَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَمَّا بَعْدُ! فَإِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ رِجَالًا مِنْكُمْ يُحَدِّثُونَ أَحَادِيثَ لَيْسَتْ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ، وَلَا تُؤْثَرُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أُولَئِكَ جُهَّالُكُمْ، فَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْأَمَانِيَّ الَّتِي تُضِلُّ أَهْلَهَا، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ”إِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِي قُرَيْشٍ، لَا يُنَازِعُهُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَكَبَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ مَا أَقَامُوا الدِّينَ.“
Imam Zuhri says that Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut’im was present with a Quraishi delegation at the court of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He narrated that news reached Muawiyah that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated this hadith: “Soon there will be a king from (the tribe of) Qahtan.” Upon hearing this, Muawiyah became angry, stood up, praised and glorified Allah Almighty, and said: “I have heard that some people narrate such things which are neither found in the Book of Allah nor transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). These people are extremely ignorant. Beware of such desires which mislead those who follow their whims. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘This (leadership) matter will remain among the Quraish as long as they uphold the religion. Allah Almighty will bring down on their faces anyone who opposes them.’”
Hadith 12027
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي قَرِيبٍ مِنْ ثَمَانِينَ رَجُلًا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، لَيْسَ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا قُرَشِيٌّ، لَا وَاللَّهِ! مَا رَأَيْتُ صَفْحَةَ وُجُوهِ رِجَالٍ قَطُّ أَحْسَنَ مِنْ وُجُوهِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ، فَذَكَرُوا النِّسَاءَ فَتَحَدَّثُوا فِيهِنَّ، فَتَحَدَّثَ مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ يَسْكُتَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَتَشَهَّدَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ”أَمَّا بَعْدُ! يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ! فَإِنَّكُمْ أَهْلُ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ مَا لَمْ تَعْصُوا اللَّهَ، فَإِذَا عَصَيْتُمُوهُ بَعَثَ إِلَيْكُمْ مَنْ يَلْحَاكُمْ كَمَا يُلْحَى هَذَا الْقَضِيبُ.“ لِقَضِيبٍ فِي يَدِهِ ثُمَّ لَحَا قَضِيبَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ أَبْيَضُ يَصْلِدُ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we, about eighty (80) men of the Quraysh, were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), all of us were Qurayshi. By Allah! That day these people looked very handsome. They mentioned women and talked about them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also conversed with them (and spoke so much that) I wished that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would become silent. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he recited the sermon of testimony and said: After praise and blessings (I will say this): O Quraysh! You are deserving of this (leadership) as long as you do not disobey Allah Almighty. If you disobey, Allah Almighty will send people who will strip your skin off just as the bark is stripped from this branch (which was in his hand). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stripped the bark from his branch, (because of which) it suddenly appeared white and hard.
Hadith 12028
عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ”إِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِيكُمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ وُلَاتُهُ، وَلَنْ يَزَالَ فِيكُمْ حَتَّى تُحْدِثُوا أَعْمَالًا، فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُمْ ذَلِكَ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ شَرَّ خَلْقِهِ، فَيَلْتَحِيكُمْ كَمَا يُلْتَحَى الْقَضِيبُ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) delivered a sermon to us and said: This caliphate will remain with you and you alone will be its owners; it will remain with you as long as you do not commit unlawful acts. When you commit unlawful acts, Allah Almighty will raise evil people against you, and they will strip your skin from you just as a stick is peeled.
Hadith 12029
عَنْ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ عَبْدٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”الْخِلَافَةُ فِي قُرَيْشٍ، وَالْحُكْمُ فِي الْأَنْصَارِ، وَالدَّعْوَةُ فِي الْحَبَشَةِ، وَالْهِجْرَةُ فِي الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَ بَعْدُ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abd (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The caliphate will be among the Quraysh, the office of judge among the Ansar, preaching and propagation among the Abyssinians, and migration among the Muslims and the later emigrants.
Hadith 12030
وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”لَا يَزَالُ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ فِي قُرَيْشٍ، مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ النَّاسِ اثْنَانِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: As long as even two men remain, the caliphate will remain among the Quraysh.
Hadith 12031
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”النَّاسُ تَبَعٌ لِقُرَيْشٍ فِي هَذَا الشَّأْنِ مُسْلِمُهُمْ تَبَعٌ لِمُسْلِمِهِمْ وَكَافِرُهُمْ تَبَعٌ لِكَافِرِهِمْ“
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In matters of governance, people follow the Quraysh; the Muslims follow the Muslim Quraysh, and the disbelievers follow the disbelieving Quraysh.
Hadith 12032
وَعَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”النَّاسُ تَبَعٌ لِقُرَيْشٍ فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ إِذَا فَقِهُوا وَاللَّهِ لَوْلَا أَنْ تَبْطَرَ قُرَيْشٌ لَأَخْبَرْتُهَا مَا لِخِيَارِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In matters of governance, people follow the Quraysh. Those who were good before Islam are also good after accepting Islam, provided they gain understanding in religion. By Allah! If I did not fear that the Quraysh would become arrogant, I would have informed them of the status of their good people in the sight of Allah Almighty.
Hadith 12033
عَنْ ذِي مِخْمَرٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ”كَانَ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ فِي حِمْيَرَ فَنَزَعَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنْهُمْ فَجَعَلَهُ فِي قُرَيْشٍ وَسَيَعُودُ إِلَيْهِمْ“ وَكَذَا كَانَ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي مُقَطَّعٍ وَحَيْثُ حَدَّثَنَا بِهِ تَكَلَّمَ عَلَى الْإِسْتَوَاءِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Dhu Makhmar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: This (matter of caliphate and kingship) was with the tribe of Himyar, Allah Almighty took it from them and entrusted it to the Quraysh, soon this matter will return to them. Abdullah, the narrator, says: In my father's book, the last words were in a fragmented form, but when he narrated them to us, he recited them continuously (just as he recited the rest of the hadith).
