It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Waraqah bint Abdullah bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit her every Friday. On the occasion of Badr, she submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Do I have permission to go with you so that I may tend to the sick and treat the wounded? Perhaps Allah, the Exalted, will grant me the rank of martyrdom. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Remain in your house, Allah, the Exalted, will grant you martyrdom right here.
Sayyida Umm Waraqah (may Allah be pleased with her) had made her slave and slave-girl mudabbar (i.e., she had announced that after her death, both of them would be set free). But by Allah’s decree, Sayyida Umm Waraqah (may Allah be pleased with her) lived a long life, and those two—the slave and the slave-girl—out of greed for their freedom, tightly wrapped a cloth around her mouth and nose, suffocating her to death, and then fled.
The case was brought before the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and it was said to him that her slave and slave-girl had killed her and fled. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood among the people and addressed them, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit Sayyida Umm Waraqah (may Allah be pleased with her) and would say, “Let us go to visit the martyr.” Her such-and-such slave-girl and such-and-such slave strangled her to death and have fled. No one should give them refuge, and whoever finds them should present them to us.
Accordingly, both of them were brought before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and they were hanged. They were the very first to be hanged.
