It is narrated from Shurayh bin Ubaid, Rashid bin Sa’d, and others that when Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) reached the place of Sargh, he received news that a severe epidemic had broken out in the land of Syria. He said to the people: I have received news that a severe epidemic has spread in Syria. I have thought that if death overtakes me and Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) remains alive, I will appoint him as my successor. If Allah asks me why I appointed him as the caliph over the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I will reply that I heard Your Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Every prophet has a trustworthy man, and my trustworthy man is Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). The people, rejecting the statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), said: What will become of the nobles of Quraysh? By this, they meant the people of Banu Fihr. But Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If death comes to me after Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him), then I will appoint Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) as the caliph. If my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, asks me why I appointed him as the caliph, I will say that I heard Your Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Mu’adh will lead the scholars on the Day of Resurrection.

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Shaqiq, he says: I asked Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her): Which companion was most beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked: Who was beloved after him? She said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). I said: After him? She said: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked: Who after him? But this time she remained silent.

It is narrated from Abu Bakhtari that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you, because I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that you are the trustworthy one of this Ummah, that is, an extremely reliable man." So Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "How can I go ahead of the man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to lead us in prayer, and then he led us in prayer until his death?"

It is narrated from Abdul Malik bin Umair that when Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) dismissed Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and appointed Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as the governor of Syria, Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The trustworthy and most reliable man of this Ummah has been sent to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that the trustworthy one of this Ummah is Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that Khalid bin Walid is one of the swords of Allah and the best individual of his family.

It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that two representatives, 'Aqib and Sayyid, from the ruler of Najran came; they wanted to engage in mutual imprecation (mubahala) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). But one of them said to the other: Do not engage in mubahala with this Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah! If he is a true Prophet and we engage in mubahala with him, then neither will we prosper nor will our descendants after us ever prosper. They presented themselves before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: We will not engage in mubahala with you; however, we will fulfill your demand. Send with us a trustworthy man so that we may pay him the agreed-upon wealth according to the peace treaty. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I will send with you a man who is truly trustworthy and honest. Upon hearing this, all the Companions raised their eyes towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (to see who would be granted this honor). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Abu 'Ubaydah! Stand up. When Sayyiduna Abu 'Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with them, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This Abu 'Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) is the trustworthy and reliable man of this Ummah. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 11947
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a narration similar to the previous hadith.
Hadith 11948
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the people of Yemen came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and requested: "Send with us a man who will teach us the Sunnah and Islam." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took the hand of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: "He is the trustworthy and honest man of this Ummah."
