It is narrated from Habib bin Aws that Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) directly told me that when we returned from the Battle of the Confederates (Ahzab) and the trench, I gathered some Qurayshi people—those who understood my status and listened to my words attentively. I said to them: By Allah! You know that in my view, Muhammad’s call will surely prevail over all, and we do not like this. I have an opinion; now tell me, what do you think about it? They said: Yes, what is your opinion? I said: I think we should go to the Negus (Najashi) and stay there. If Muhammad prevails over our people, we will be with the Negus, and being under his rule is more preferable to us than being under Muhammad’s rule. And if our people prevail, we are well-known, and we will receive only good from them. The people said: Indeed, your opinion is appropriate. Then I said to them: Gather wealth to give him gifts; he liked leather from our region as a present. So we collected a lot of leather to give him and set out, and we reached him. By Allah! We were with him when Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri also arrived there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him to discuss the matter of Ja’far and his companions. He came to the Negus and then left. Now I said to my companions: This is Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri. If I go to the Negus and ask him to hand him over to me, he will do so, and I will kill him, and the Quraysh will acknowledge that I have fulfilled their right by killing Muhammad’s envoy. So I went to his court and, as I used to do before, performed a prostration of respect upon entering. He said: Welcome, friend! Have you brought any gifts for me from your homeland? I said: Yes, O King! I have brought a large quantity of leather for you. Then I presented it to him. He liked it very much and expressed that he needed it. After that, I said: O King! I saw a man here who has just left your presence; he is the envoy of our enemy. Hand him over to me so that I may kill him; he is the killer of our honored and best people. Upon hearing this, the Negus became enraged. He stretched out his hand and struck his own nose so hard that I feared he might have broken the bone of his nose. Out of fear, I felt that if the earth were to split open, I would enter it. Then I said: O King! By Allah, if I had known that this would displease you so much, I would never have made such a request. The Negus said: The angel who used to come to Musa (Moses), now comes to the man you speak of—should I hand over his envoy to you so that you may kill him? I said: O King! Is he really like that? He said: O Amr! Woe to you, obey me and follow him. By Allah, he is surely upon the truth, and he will certainly prevail over his opponents, just as Musa (Moses) prevailed over Pharaoh and his armies. I said: Take my pledge of allegiance for Islam on his behalf. The Negus said: Very well. So he extended his hand, and I pledged allegiance to him for Islam. Then I went back to my companions, while my opinion had completely changed from before, but I concealed my acceptance of Islam from them. Then I set out towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to become Muslim. I met Khalid bin Walid, who was coming from Mecca; this was before the conquest of Mecca. I asked him: Abu Sulaiman! Where are you coming from? He said: By Allah! The path has become clear; Muhammad is surely a Prophet. By Allah, I am going to become Muslim. How long will I keep wandering here and there? I said: By Allah, I too have come only to accept Islam. We reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Khalid bin Walid went ahead. He accepted Islam and pledged allegiance. After him, I also approached and said: O Messenger of Allah! I pledge allegiance to you on the condition that all my previous sins are forgiven, and I forgot to mention the sins that might occur later. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr! Pledge allegiance; indeed, Islam wipes out all previous sins, and migration erases all previous sins. So I pledged allegiance to him and then returned. Ibn Ishaq says: A man whom I consider trustworthy told me that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talha bin Abi Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with both of them; when these two entered Islam, he also became Muslim with them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me a message saying, "Put on your clothes and weapons and come to me." I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was performing ablution. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked up at me and then lowered his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I intend to appoint you as the commander of an army. Allah will keep you safe and grant you spoils of war, or He will grant you a righteous desire for wealth." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I did not become a Muslim out of greed for wealth and riches, but rather out of desire for Islam. I became a Muslim so that I could remain in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr! Good wealth is a good thing for a righteous man."

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Shamasah that when the time of death approached for Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him), he was overcome with weeping. His son Abdullah said to him: "Why are you crying? Is it because of the fear of death?" He replied: "No, by Allah, not because of death, but because of the stages that come after death." Abdullah said: "You have performed many good deeds," and then he began to remind him of the moments spent in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his conquests in Syria. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have left out the best thing of all—that I have professed and acknowledged the testimony of faith. There are three stages of my life, and in each stage I have known myself. In the first stage, I was a disbeliever and a fierce enemy of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If I had died in that state, Hell would have been obligatory upon me. When I pledged allegiance at the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I felt the greatest awe of him. I never looked at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a full gaze, and whatever I wished to ask him, I would never ask a second time. This continued until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed on to Allah. This was due to my shyness before him. If I had died in those days, people would have said: 'Congratulations to Amr, he became a Muslim and lived the best life; Paradise is hoped for him.' After that, I became a ruler and was involved in many affairs. I do not know whether those matters will be established in my favor or against me. When I die, do not weep over me at all, and do not let any eulogizer or anyone carrying fire go with my funeral. Shroud me well, for Allah's angels will take a strict account from me, and cover me well with earth, for surely my right side does not deserve more earth than my left side. And do not place wood or stone on my grave. When you have finished burying me, remain by my grave for as long as it takes to slaughter a camel and prepare its meat, so that I may feel some comfort from your presence."

It is narrated from Abu Nofal bin Abi Aqrab that at the time of death, a state of anxiety overcame Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him). When his son Abdullah saw his condition, he said: O Abu Abdullah! What is this anxiety and distress? You held such a status that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to keep you close to him and would appoint you as governor over various regions. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My son! All this did happen, let me tell you about it. By Allah! I do not know whether his relationship with me was based on love or for the sake of winning my heart. However, I bear witness that there were two men whom Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to love until he departed from this world. One was Ibn Sumayyah and the other was Ibn Umm Abd (that is, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with them both). While Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) was saying these things to his son, he had placed his hand on the end of his chin and said: O Allah! (We are sinners) You gave us commands, but we did not care for them, and You forbade us from many things, yet we committed them. We are only hopeful and seekers of Your forgiveness. Saying this, and in this very state, he passed away.

It is narrated from Hasan Basri that a man said to Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him): "What is your opinion about the person whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) loved throughout his life? Would he not be a righteous man?" He replied: "Why not?" So the man said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he had appointed you as his governor." Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He did appoint me as governor, but by Allah! I do not know whether he appointed me because of his love for me or to seek my help. However, I will tell you that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he loved two men: one was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other was Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once fear and panic spread in Madinah Munawwarah, so I went to Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him). He was sitting with his sword strapped on. I took the sword from him and sat down with its strap fastened. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Why did your panic not turn towards Allah and His Messenger? Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why did you not do as these two did?
