It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said regarding Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): This is Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, who is the most generous (i.e., charitable) among the Quraysh and excels the most in maintaining ties of kinship.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that an Ansari made a sarcastic remark about the father of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who had died during the time of ignorance. Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), in anger, slapped him. The people of the Ansari’s tribe came and said: By Allah, just as he has slapped, we will certainly slap him in retaliation. They came armed with weapons. When this matter reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he ascended the pulpit and said: O people! Who is the most honorable person in the sight of Allah among the people on the face of the earth? The people said: You are. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then Abbas is from me and I am from Abbas. Do not hurt our living ones by speaking ill of our deceased ones. Then those people came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), apologized, and said: O Messenger of Allah! We seek Allah’s refuge from your anger and displeasure.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdul Muttalib bin Rabee’ah bin Harith bin Abdul Muttalib that Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a state of anger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What has made you angry?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! What enmity do the Quraysh have with us? When they meet each other, they meet with great happiness, but when they meet us, their faces change." Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became so angry that his face turned red and sweat began to flow from his forehead. Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became extremely angry, sweat would begin to flow. When this state of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) subsided, he said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul! Faith cannot enter anyone’s heart until he loves you for the sake of Allah Almighty and His Messenger." (In another narration: "Until he loves you for the sake of Allah Almighty and because of my kinship.") Then he said: "O people! (Remember) Whoever hurts Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), has hurt me. A man’s uncle is like his father."
