Hadith 11789
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ فِي بَيْتِ مَيْمُونَةَ، فَوَضَعْتُ لَهُ وُضُوءً مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، قَالَ: فَقَالَتْ مَيْمُونَةُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَضَعَ لَكَ هَذَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقَالَ: ”اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْهُ التَّأْوِيلَ“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at the house of Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). I placed water for you at night for ablution. Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed you, “O Messenger of Allah! This water was placed for you by Abdullah bin Abbas.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication for him: “O Allah! Grant him deep understanding in religion and the knowledge of the interpretation of the Qur’an.”
Hadith 11790
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى كَتِفِي أَوْ عَلَى مَنْكَبِي، شَكَّ سَعِيدٌ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ”اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْهُ التَّأْوِيلَ“
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on his shoulder and made this supplication: O Allah! Grant him understanding in religion and knowledge of interpretation.
Hadith 11791
وَعَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”اللَّهُمَّ أَعْطِ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ الْحِكْمَةَ وَعَلِّمْهُ التَّأْوِيلَ“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for him as follows: O Allah, grant Ibn Abbas wisdom and the knowledge of interpretation.
Hadith 11792
وَعَنْهُ بِلَفْظٍ آخَرَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَالَ: مَسَحَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأْسِي وَدَعَا لِي بِالْحِكْمَةِ
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over his head and prayed for wisdom for him.
Hadith 11793
وَعَنْهُ، قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، ضَمَّنِي إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ: ”اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْهُ الْكِتَابَ“
(Third chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) embraced me and prayed: O Allah! Grant him the knowledge of the Noble Qur'an.
Hadith 11794
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، أَنَّ كُرَيْبًا أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَصَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَهُ، فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي فَجَرَّنِي فَجَعَلَنِي حِذَاءَهُ، فَلَمَّا أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِ خَنَسْتُ، فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ، قَالَ لِي: ”مَا شَأْنِي أَجْعَلُكَ حِذَاءِي فَتَخْنِسُ?“، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَوَيَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ حِذَاءَكَ وَأَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الَّذِي أَعْطَاكَ اللَّهُ؟ قَالَ: فَأَعْجَبْتُهُ فَدَعَا اللَّهَ لِي أَنْ يَزِيدَنِي عِلْمًا وَفَهْمًا، قَالَ: ثُمَّ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَامَ حَتَّى سَمِعْتُهُ يَنْفُخُ، ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ بِلَالٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الصَّلَاةَ، فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى مَا أَعَادَ وُضُوءً
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the last part of the night. I began to pray behind him, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand, pulled me forward, and made me stand next to him at his side. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the prayer, I slipped back a little. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, he said to me: What happened to you? I made you stand next to me, but you slipped back? I replied: O Messenger of Allah! You are the Messenger of Allah, Allah has granted you a great rank and status. Is it appropriate for someone like me to stand next to you and pray? My words pleased you very much, and you prayed to Allah for me that Allah increase me in knowledge and understanding. After that, I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sleep so deeply that he began to snore. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came and called out to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! The time for prayer has come. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and performed the prayer, and did not perform ablution again (because during sleep, the heart of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remains awake).
Hadith 11795
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَالَ: مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا أَلْعَبُ مَعَ الْغِلْمَانِ، فَاخْتَبَأْتُ مِنْهُ خَلْفَ بَابٍ فَدَعَانِي فَحَطَّأَنِي حَطْأَةً ثُمَّ بَعَثَ بِي إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was playing with the children when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me, so I hid behind a door. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me, gently shook me, and sent me to call Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 11796
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعِنْدَهُ رَجُلٌ يُنَاجِيهِ فَكَانَ كَالْمُعْرِضِ عَنْ أَبِي فَخَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ فَقَالَ لِي أَبِي أَيْ بُنَيَّ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ابْنِ عَمِّكَ كَالْمُعْرِضِ عَنِّي فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَتِ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ رَجُلٌ يُنَاجِيهِ قَالَ فَرَجَعْنَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَبِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّهُ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ رَجُلٌ يُنَاجِيكَ فَهَلْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ أَحَدٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”وَهَلْ رَأَيْتَهُ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ“ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ ”فَإِنَّ ذَاكَ جِبْرِيلُ وَهُوَ الَّذِي شَغَلَنِي عَنْكَ“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was present with my father in the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and there was another man sitting with him, who was whispering with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It seemed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not paying attention to my father. We got up and left from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). My father said to me: Son! Did you see that your cousin (i.e., the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) did not pay any attention to me? I said: Father, there was another man sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was engaged in conversation with him. We returned to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This time, my father said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): I spoke to Abdullah in this way, and he told me that there was a man sitting with you, and you were conversing with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Abdullah! Did you see that man? I said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That was Jibreel (Gabriel), I could not pay attention to you people because of him.
Hadith 11797
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَمَلَهُ وَحَمَلَ أَخَاهُ هَذَا قُدَّامَهُ وَهَذَا خَلْفَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took him and his brother onto his mount, seating one in front of him and the other behind him.
Hadith 11798
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا ابْنُ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that at the time of the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), his age was fifteen years.
Hadith 11799
وَعَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ جَمَعْتُ الْمُحْكَمَ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا ابْنُ عَشْرِ حِجَجٍ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ وَمَا الْمُحْكَمُ قَالَ الْمُفَصَّلُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I had memorized the Muhkam Surahs during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while I was ten years old. I (Saeed bin Jubair) asked him: What is meant by Muhkam? He said: The Mufassal Surahs.
Hadith 11800
قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ إِنَّ الَّذِي تَدْعُونَهُ الْمُفَصَّلَ هُوَ الْمُحْكَمُ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا ابْنُ عَشَرِ سِنِينَ وَقَدْ قَرَأْتُ الْمُحْكَمَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, he says: The chapters which you call "Mufassal", they are also called "Muhkam". At the time of the passing of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, I was ten years old, but I had already memorized these "Muhkam" chapters.
Hadith 11801
وَعَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رِبَاحٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا خَتِينٌ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I had already been circumcised.
Hadith 11802
عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كَتَبَ نَجْدَةُ الْحَرُورِيُّ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ قَتْلِ الصِّبْيَانِ وَعَنِ الْخُمُسِ لِمَنْ هُوَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ مَتَى يَنْقَطِعُ عَنْهُ الْيُتْمُ وَعَنِ النِّسَاءِ هَلْ كَانَ يُخْرَجُ بِهِنَّ أَوْ يَحْضُرْنَ الْقِتَالَ وَعَنِ الْعَبْدِ هَلْ لَهُ فِي الْمَغْنَمِ نَصِيبٌ قَالَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَمَّا الصِّبْيَانُ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ الْخَضِرَ تَعْرِفُ الْكَافِرَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَاقْتُلْهُمْ وَأَمَّا الْخُمُسُ فَكُنَّا نَقُولُ إِنَّهُ لَنَا فَزَعَمَ قَوْمُنَا أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَنَا وَأَمَّا النِّسَاءُ فَقَدْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْرُجُ مَعَهُ بِالنِّسَاءِ فَيُدَاوِينَ الْمَرْضَى وَيَقُمْنَ عَلَى الْجَرْحَى وَلَا يَحْضُرْنَ الْقِتَالَ وَأَمَّا الصَّبِيُّ فَيَنْقَطِعُ عَنْهُ الْيُتْمُ إِذَا احْتَلَمَ وَأَمَّا الْعَبْدُ فَلَيْسَ لَهُ مِنَ الْمَغْنَمِ نَصِيبٌ وَلَكِنَّهُ قَدْ كَانَ يُرْضَخُ لَهُمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Najdah Haruri wrote him a letter and asked him about these issues: What is the ruling on killing children? Who are the rightful recipients of khums? When does the designation of orphanhood end for a child? Can women participate in jihad or not? Does a slave have a share in the spoils of war or not? In reply, he wrote: If you are Khidr and you know that the child will grow up to be a disbeliever, then you can kill him. As for the issue of khums, we have always said that it is our right, that is, the right of Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib, but now a group among us says that it is not our right. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to take women with him in jihad; they would treat the sick and nurse the wounded, but they would not participate in fighting. When a child reaches puberty, the designation of orphanhood ends for him. A slave has no share in the spoils of war, but to encourage them, they would be given something as a gift.
