It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Anis (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and said: I have received information that Khalid bin Sufyan bin Nubaiah is gathering people to attack me, he is currently in the valley of ‘Urnah, go and kill him. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please describe his appearance to me so that I may recognize him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you see him, you will be overcome with trembling. So I hung my sword and set out. When I reached him in ‘Urnah, I saw that there were women with him and he was preparing a place for them; it was the time of ‘Asr. When I saw him, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had described, I was overcome with trembling. I advanced towards him, fearing that a fight might break out between him and me and I might not be able to pray, so I prayed while walking towards him and performed bowing and prostration by gesture. When I reached him, he asked: Who are you? I said: I am an Arab. I have heard that you are gathering an army against him, meaning Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and I have come for the same purpose. He said: Yes, yes, I am on this mission. I walked with him for a while, and when I got the opportunity, I struck him with my sword and killed him and left from there. I left his women there in such a state that they were bent over him. When I returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he saw me and said: The face has succeeded. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have killed him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, you have spoken the truth. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up with me and went to his house, and he gave me a staff and said: Abdur Rahman bin Anis! Keep it safe with you. I took that staff and went out among the people. They asked: What kind of staff is this? I told them that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given me this staff and has ordered me to keep it safe. They said: Will you not go back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him for further clarification about it? So I went again to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! For what purpose have you given me this staff? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On the Day of Resurrection, this staff will be a sign between me and you; on the Day of Resurrection, very few people will have a staff or something to lean on. So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) tied that staff with his sword and it always remained with him, until when he passed away, that staff was also placed with his shroud and both were buried together.
