Hadith 11747
أَخْبَرَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ لِصُهَيْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا لَوْلَا ثَلَاثُ خِصَالٍ فِيكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِكَ بَأْسٌ قَالَ وَمَا هُنَّ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا نَرَاكَ تَعِيبُ شَيْئًا قَالَ اكْتِنَاؤُكَ بِأَبِي يَحْيَى وَلَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَدٌ وَادِّعَاؤُكَ إِلَى النَّمِرِ بْنِ قَاسِطٍ وَأَنْتَ رَجُلٌ أَلْكَنُ وَأَنَّكَ لَا تُمْسِكُ الْمَالَ قَالَ أَمَّا اكْتِنَائِي بِأَبِي يَحْيَى فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَنَّانِي بِهَا فَلَا أَدَعُهَا حَتَّى أَلْقَاهُ وَأَمَّا ادِّعَائِي إِلَى النَّمِرِ بْنِ قَاسِطٍ فَإِنِّي امْرُؤٌ مِنْهُمْ وَلَكِنْ اسْتُرْضِعَ لِي بِالْأَيْلَةِ فَهَذِهِ اللُّكْنَةُ مِنْ ذَاكَ وَأَمَّا الْمَالُ فَهَلْ تَرَانِي أُنْفِقُ إِلَّا فِي حَقٍّ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Aslam (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him): If you did not have three traits, there would be no fault in you. He asked: What are they? By Allah! I have not seen you finding fault in anything. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One is that you have adopted the kunya (nickname) of Abu Yahya, while you have no children. Second, you attribute yourself to a great person like Namar bin Qasit, while your condition is that you have a stammer in your speech. And third, whatever wealth comes to you, you spend it and do not save it. Upon hearing this, he replied: As for my kunya, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me this kunya, and now I will not abandon it until I meet you, that is, until I die. The second matter, that I attribute myself to Namar bin Qasit, since I am from those people, why should I not attribute myself to them? However, the reality is that I was nursed in Aylah, and this stammer is a result of that. As for spending wealth instead of saving it, what do you think, do I spend it unlawfully?
Hadith 11748
عَنْ زُهَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ صُهَيْبًا كَانَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا يَحْيَى وَيَقُولُ إِنَّهُ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ وَيُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ الْكَثِيرَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَا صُهَيْبُ مَا لَكَ تُكَنَّى أَبَا يَحْيَى وَلَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَدٌ وَتَقُولُ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ وَتُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ الْكَثِيرَ وَذَلِكَ سَرَفٌ فِي الْمَالِ فَقَالَ صُهَيْبٌ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَنَّانِي أَبَا يَحْيَى وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ فِي النَّسَبِ فَأَنَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّمِرِ بْنِ قَاسِطٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَوْصِلِ وَلَكِنِّي سُبِيتُ غُلَامًا صَغِيرًا قَدْ غَفَلْتُ أَهْلِي وَقَوْمِي وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ فِي الطَّعَامِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ ”خِيَارُكُمْ مَنْ أَطْعَمَ الطَّعَامَ وَرَدَّ السَّلَامَ“ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَحْمِلُنِي عَلَى أَنْ أُطْعِمَ الطَّعَامَ
It is narrated from Hamzah bin Suhaib that the kunyah of Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Yahya, and he used to attribute himself to the Arabs, and he used to feed people abundantly. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Suhaib! You have no children, so why have you adopted the kunyah Abu Yahya? And you claim that you are originally an Arab, and you feed others abundantly—this is a waste of wealth?" Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the kunyah Abu Yahya. As for your comment about my lineage, I am by family from the clan of the chief of the people of Mosul, Namir bin Qasit. However, I was a small child when I was taken captive, and I forgot my family and my people. As for your statement about my feeding others, remember that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: 'The best among you is the one who feeds others and responds to greetings.' This is what motivates me to feed others."
