Hadith 11716
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I never heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say about anyone that his parents be sacrificed for him, except for Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him). I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the day of Uhud: O Sa’d! Shoot arrows at the enemy, my parents be sacrificed for you.

Hadith 11718
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Malik, that is, Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I am the first Arab who was granted the honor of shooting an arrow in the way of Allah. I have seen the companions with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in such a state that we had nothing to eat except the leaves of thorny trees and the leaves of the acacia tree. When we went to relieve ourselves, we would pass droppings like goats, and there was no impurity mixed with the excrement (i.e., the excrement was completely dry! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched a detachment in 1 AH. The purpose was to attack a Qurayshi trade caravan. There was an exchange of arrows from both sides. Sa’d was included in this detachment and he was the first to shoot an arrow, which he is mentioning in this hadith. Fath al-Bari: p. 82. (Abdullah Rafiq)). Now, the condition of the people of Banu Asad is that they taunt me regarding religion. If their taunt is based on reality, then I am at a loss and my deeds are ruined.

Hadith 11719
(Second narration) Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw myself with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was the seventh person in the group who had embraced Islam. We had nothing for food except the leaves of thorny trees, and when we relieved ourselves, we would pass droppings like goats, and this excrement was not sticky. But now the Banu Asad mock me about Islam; if what they say is true, then I am at a loss and all my deeds have been wasted.

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The first person to enter through this door is among the people of Paradise. Then, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) entered through that door.

Hadith 11721
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Four verses were revealed about my father (Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him). My father said: (During the Battle of Badr! This shows that Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas was among the very first to embrace Islam. According to a narration in Bukhari: 3727, he also considered himself to be a third of Islam.) During the battle, I found a sword. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please grant me this sword as an extra share. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Put it down. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please grant me this sword as an extra share, just consider that I cannot do without it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Put it back where you picked it up from. At that moment, the verse was revealed: {یَسْأَلُونَکَ الْأَنْفَالَ قُلِ الْأَنْفَالُ} This is the recitation of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), (whereas in the Mutawatir recitation of the Noble Qur'an it is: "Yas'aloonaka 'anil-anfal"). Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My mother said: Does Allah not command you to maintain ties of kinship and to be good to your parents? By Allah! I will neither eat nor drink until you disbelieve in Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So she would not eat anything, until the family would open her mouth with a stick and put something to drink in it. Shu'bah says: I think my teacher, Simak bin Harb, also mentioned food. At that moment, this verse was revealed: {وَوَصَّیْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَیْہِ حَمَلَتْہُ اُمُّہ وَہْنًا عَلٰی وَہْنٍ وَّفِصٰلُہ فِیْ عَامَیْنِ اَنِ اشْکُرْ لِیْ وَلِوَالِدَیْکَ اِلَیَّ الْمَصِیْرُ۔ وَاِنْ جَاہَدٰکَ عَلٰٓی اَنْ تُشْرِکَ بِیْ مَا لَیْسَ لَکَ بِہٖعِلْمٌفَلَاتُطِعْہُمَاوَصَاحِبْہُمَافِی الدُّنْیَا مَعْرُوْفًا ْ وَّاتَّبِعْ سَبِیْلَ مَنْ اَنَابَ اِلَیَّ ثُمَّ اِلَیَّ مَرْجِعُکُمْ فَاُنَبِّئُکُمْ بِمَا کُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ۔} … And indeed, We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. (That is why We have advised him:) Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. But accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. (Surah Luqman: 14, 15) Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was ill, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! May I bequeath all my wealth (in charity for the sake of Allah)? He said: No. I said: Half of my wealth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. I asked: One third? Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, and people started acting upon this. An Ansari invited people to a meal, people ate there and drank wine and became intoxicated. This was before the prohibition of wine. We gathered at his place, people began to boast to one another, the Ansar said: We are superior, and the Muhajirun said: We are superior. A man picked up a camel's jawbone and struck Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), splitting his nose. Sayyiduna Sa'd's nose was split. At that moment, these verses were revealed: {یَا أَیُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَیْسِرُ وَالْأَنْصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّیْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوْہُ لَعَلَّکُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ۔ اِنَّمَا یُرِیْدُ الشَّیْطَانُ اَنْ یُّوْقِعَ بَیْنَکُمُ الْعَدَاوَۃَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِیْ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَیْسِرِ وَیَصُدَّکُمْ عَنْ ذِکْرِ اللّٰہِ وَعَنِ الصَّلٰوۃِ فَھَلْ اَنْتُمْ مُّنْتَھُوْنَ} … O you who have believed! Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi’ah that Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) used to relate that one night the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) could not sleep. She was lying beside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and she asked him: O Messenger of Allah! What is the matter? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: I wish that some righteous man from among my companions would guard me tonight. While I was still thinking about this, I heard the sound of weapons. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who is it? The newcomer said: O Messenger of Allah! I am Sa’d bin Malik; I have come to have the honor of guarding you. (After this, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was so at ease that) Sayyida (may Allah be pleased with her) says: After that, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) snoring as he slept.

It is narrated from ‘Abayah bin Rifa’ah that news reached Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), when he built a mansion, said: “Now the voices (noise) of the people have stopped coming in.” So Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) there. He came, and as soon as he arrived, he made preparations, bought a stick for one dirham, and set fire to that door. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed that a man had done this. He said: “Yes, that is Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him).” Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him and said: “By Allah! I did not say any such word.” Muhammad bin Maslamah said: “Whatever you are saying, we will convey your statement to the Commander of the Faithful, and we will carry out whatever order we have been given.” Thus, he set fire to the door. Then Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) offered Muhammad bin Maslamah some wealth, but he refused to take anything. After leaving there, Muhammad bin Maslamah came to Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He had returned very quickly; it had only taken nineteen days for his going and return. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “If I did not have a good opinion about you, I would have thought that you did not fully carry out the responsibility entrusted to you on our behalf.” Muhammad bin Maslamah said: “Why not, why would I not properly fulfill my responsibility?” He said: “Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) sends you greetings and apologizes, saying that he did not say any such thing.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: “Did he give you provisions for the journey or not?” Muhammad bin Maslamah said: “No, he did not.” “Why did you yourself not give me provisions for the journey?” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I did not order provisions to be given to you because I did not want you to benefit while the people of Madinah are in need, and the responsibility would remain on me. These people of Madinah are present around me, whom the severity of hunger has killed. I have heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): No man should eat his fill alone while his neighbor is hungry.”
