It is narrated from Bishr Taghlabi that he used to sit with Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him). He related that there was a companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Damascus, who was called Ibn Hanzaliyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He was a reclusive type of person, mingled very little with people, remained engaged in prayer, and after finishing prayer, until he reached home, he would remain busy in the glorification and exaltation of Allah Almighty. One day, we were sitting with Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) when he (Ibn Hanzaliyah) passed by us. Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "Please say something to us, we will benefit from it and nothing will be diminished from you." He narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If Khuraim Asadi did not have two things, he would be a very good man: one is that his hair is long up to his shoulders, and the other is that his lower garment hangs below his ankles." In another narration, the words are: "If he would shorten his hair and also shorten his garment." When this reached Sayyiduna Khuraim (may Allah be pleased with him), he immediately took a knife and cut his hair up to his ears and raised his garment up to the middle of his shins. Qais says: After this incident, I once went to the service of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), where an elderly man was present, his hair above his ears and his garment up to the middle of his shins. When I inquired about him, those present said that this is Sayyiduna Khuraim Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him).
