It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I entered Paradise and I heard the sound of footsteps ahead of me. I inquired, "Who is this?" Jibreel informed me that it was Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). I went further and saw that the majority in Paradise were the poor emigrants and the young children of the Muslims, and I saw very few wealthy people and women in Paradise. I was told that the wealthy were held back at the gate of Paradise to give account and to be purified from shortcomings. As for the women, their love for gold and silk kept them occupied in heedlessness. Then we came out from one of the eight gates of Paradise, and when I was near the gate, one side of the scale was brought near me and I was placed in it, and my Ummah was placed in the other side, and I was heavier. Then Abu Bakr was brought, he was placed in one side and the rest of the Ummah in the other, and Abu Bakr was heavier. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought, he was placed in one side and the whole Ummah in the other, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was heavier. My entire Ummah was presented before me one by one and people kept passing by. I did not see Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and I had lost hope regarding him, when he arrived. I said, "Abdur Rahman! Where were you?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed for you, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I have barely reached you. I thought that after many difficulties I would be able to see you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Why is that?" He replied, "Because of the abundance of wealth, I was subjected to a lengthy reckoning and was purified from shortcomings."
