بَابُ ظُهُورٍ عَدْلِهِ وَ كَرَمِ أَخْلَاقِهِ فِي قِصَّةِ الْقَصْعَةِ الَّتِي كَسَرَتْهَا عَائِشَةُرَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَاْ
Chapter on the Manifestation of His Justice and Noble Character in the Story of the Bowl That ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) Broke
Hadith 11477
أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ عِنْدَ بَعْضِ نِسَائِهِ قَالَ أَظُنُّهَا عَائِشَةَ فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِحْدَى أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَعَ خَادِمٍ لَهَا بِقَصْعَةٍ فِيهَا طَعَامٌ قَالَ فَضَرَبَتِ الْأُخْرَى بِيَدِ الْخَادِمِ فَكُسِرَتِ الْقَصْعَةُ بِنِصْفَيْنِ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ”غَارَتْ أُمُّكُمْ“ قَالَ وَأَخَذَ الْكَسْرَتَيْنِ فَضَمَّ إِحْدَاهُمَا إِلَى الْأُخْرَى فَجَعَلَ فِيهَا الطَّعَامَ ثُمَّ قَالَ ”كُلُوا“ فَأَكَلُوا وَحَبَسَ الرَّسُولَ وَالْقَصْعَةَ حَتَّى فَرَغُوا فَدَفَعَ إِلَى الرَّسُولِ قَصْعَةً أُخْرَى وَتَرَكَ الْمَكْسُورَةَ مَكَانَهَا
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was present with Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) or with another wife, when another Mother of the Believers sent a bowl of food through her servant. The wife at whose house the Prophet was, struck the servant’s hand and broke the bowl. Seeing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Your mother has become jealous.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) picked up the two broken pieces of the bowl and joined them together, and began to put the food into the broken bowl, and said: “Eat, eat.” The other people present ate the food. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept the servant and the bowl back. When they finished eating, he gave the servant another bowl and kept the broken bowl.
Hadith 11478
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ بِنَحْوِهِ وَفِيهِ وَحَبَسَ الرَّسُولَ حَتَّى جَاءَتِ الْأُخْرَى بِقَصْعَتِهَا فَدَفَعَ الْقَصْعَةَ الصَّحِيحَةَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الَّتِي كُسِرَتْ قَصْعَتُهَا وَتَرَكَ الْمَكْسُورَةَ لِلَّتِي كَسَرَتْ
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), this hadith is similar to the previous hadith. However, in this one, these words are also present: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped the servant, until another Mother of the Believers brought her bowl and gave it. So, the Mother of the Believers whose bowl had broken, a sound bowl was sent to her by the hand of the servant, and the broken one was left with those who had broken it.
Hadith 11479
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ صَانِعَةَ طَعَامٍ مِثْلَ صَفِيَّةَ أَهْدَتْ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَاءً فِيهِ طَعَامٌ وَفِي لَفْظٍ وَهُوَ عِنْدِي فَمَا مَلَكْتُ نَفْسِي أَنْ كَسَرْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا كَفَّارَتُهُ فَقَالَ ”إِنَاءٌ كَإِنَاءٍ وَطَعَامٌ كَطَعَامٍ“
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I have not seen anyone prepare food like Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), she sent a bowl of food to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In another narration, the words are that on that day the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was with me, and due to jealousy I could not control myself and I broke that bowl. I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the expiation for this now? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A bowl like the (broken) bowl and food like the (spilled) food.
